The one public poll done prior to the June 10 debate among the eight candidates for New York City Comptroller showed that the runaway leader was Undecided, the choice of 44 percent of those surveyed.
A distant second was City Council Speaker Corey Johnson with 18 percent, but that was twice the support of his nearest rivals. So it was not surprising that two other candidates in particular trained their fire on him during the 90-minute faceoff on NY1, although with one of them, Brooklyn Council Member Brad Lander, a personal element seemed to accompany political calculation.
