Johnson Lost Face By Alienating Both Sides In NYPD Budget War

While Council Speaker Corey Johnson's decision to end his candidacy for Mayor Sept. 24 was viewed as a product of his having let down progressive forces by not cutting the NYPD budget more, he also antagonized union leaders who represent law-enforcement personnel and believe the cuts he agreed to were harmful and the result of pressure by radical protesters.

"He was not a supporter of the police, and we're happy he's not going to be moving up," Detectives' Endowment Association President Paul DiGiacomo said in a phone interview shortly after it was disclosed that Mr. Johnson was leaving a race in which he had been considered one of the front-runners before the controversy over those cuts and what were dubbed "police-reform" bills exploded early this summer.
