In the second such incident to befall the NYPD this year, Police Officer Brian Mulkeen, who was on the ground struggling with an armed suspect outside a notorious public-housing block early Sunday night, was killed by friendly fire.
Officer Mulkeen, an Anti-Crime Officer assigned to the 47th Precinct, was working a detail with colleagues about 12:30 a.m. when they tried to stop two men adjacent to the Edenwald Houses on East 229th St., possibly in connection with a spate of recent shootings, Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill and Chief Kevin Maloney of the Force Investigation Division said during a Monday afternoon press briefing on the incident.
