Labor Commissioner Renee Campion was unusually expansive Nov. 16 when we asked her about the deal with the Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association to defer part of a retroactive wage payment, retiree welfare-fund contributions, and a lump-sum payment to the union's annuity fund to save the city $27 million in the current fiscal year.
That brought the total yielded under seven deals ranging from the largest employee union, the United Federation of Teachers, to the smallest, representing nine city Glaziers, to $722 million—nearly three-quarters of the way to the $1 billion in labor savings Mayor de Blasio sought to avert up to 22,000 layoffs at least through next June 30, when the city's fiscal year ends.
