Marty Markowitz was the Borough President who decided to bring some jaunty Brooklyn attitude to the highway signs marking its boundaries early this century. Those riding onto borough soil were greeted by signs stating, “Welcome to Brooklyn: How Sweet It Is,” while those exiting for another borough were confronted by: “Leaving Brooklyn… Fuhgeddaboudit.”

When Eric Adams succeeded him in 2014, he decided to keep the signs along outposts from the Williamsburg Bridge to the Belt Parkway, and the spirit that came with them. On Jan. 13, his Twitter account stated, “Each one of us is an intersection of different ethnicities, identities and faiths. We need to see ourselves in each other. That’s the mission of our Breaking Bread, Building Bonds initiative,” which uses the slogan, “Fighting Hate, one meal at a time.”
