Mayor de Blasio offered another example of his reluctance to take strong action in politically dicey situations in his handling of a May 18 incident in which a large gathering of students at a yeshiva in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant section prompted a police response but no citation.

It was not the first time during the pandemic that members of the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn engaged in a blatant violation of social-distancing rules, and Mr. de Blasio, who has close ties to leaders of that community, was pressed on why cops hadn't arrested adults there or issued summonses.
