The president of a former District Council 37 local representing staff in the city’s juvenile-detention centers that merged with Social Services Employees Union Local 371 is seeking to oust its longtime leader.
Alex Parker, who headed Local 1457 for three terms until the end of 2009, is aiming to unseat Local 371 President Anthony Wells in an ongoing mail-ballot election, which was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Mr. Parker, who worked as a grievance representative at Local 371 until last year, contended that the union was very different from when his 400 members joined the larger local a decade ago.
