Two retired city police officers who served as drivers for former President of John Jay College of Criminal Justice Jeremy Travis were overpaid using funds from the City University of New York’s Research Foundation, the state Inspector General’s Office announced in a Nov. 23 report.
Although the state capped salaries for public-service retirees at $30,000, the drivers earned well-beyond that figure for more than a decade, the probe stated. In February 2005, Mr. Travis, a former top NYPD official, hired a full-time driver—a former NYPD employee—at a salary of $68,000. Because the driver’s hours were longer than expected due to Mr. Travis’s busy schedule, a second part-time driver was hired in April 2006, earning $43,000 a year.
