The annual cost of settling thousands of lawsuits brought by the parents of special-education students continued to rise last year, according to City Comptroller Scott Stringer’s Annual Claims Report. Over the same period the Comptroller evaluated, the city also saw an increase in the number of new claims filed against the Department of Education for failure to comply with the Federal Individuals with Disability Education Act,
The city saw an eight-percent spike in the amount of money it had to pay out to settle special education lawsuits brought by parents in the last fiscal year compared to the prior fiscal year. In fiscal year 2018, which ended June 30, 2018, the city paid $303 million, compared to $279.7 the year before.
