DAs Calling For Stiffer Penalty For Spitting on Transit Workers

Amid a growing outcry from transit workers and their unions about a rise in cases of those employees being spat on while doing their jobs, the city's five District Attorneys March 3 declared their support for upgrading the penalty for that offense from a violation to a misdemeanor, which could result in jail time for those convicted.

Under current law, police can't arrest individuals who spit on transit workers unless officers actually witness the incident, according to Transport Workers Union Local 100.
