In a bid to boost his plan for the eventual closing of Rikers Island—which correction unions have derided as “Fantasy Island”—Mayor de Blasio announced Dec. 27 that the monthly jail population had fallen below 9,000 for the first time in more than 30 years, but union leaders called that a false indicator in a still-dangerous system.
“Today, New York City has the lowest incarceration rate of all large U.S. cities and crime rates continue to fall, proving that a large city can have small jails and safe communities,” he said in a press release.
