City Gets Failing Grade On Lead in Classrooms

Just one-in-eight schools serving children under 6 had records showing they’d received annual lead-paint inspections between 2015 and 2019, according to a Gothamist probe of Department of Education data.

Despite the fact that schools were required to perform lead-paint inspections annually, the Feb. 5 article revealed that just 12 percent of schools were checked for the hazardous substance each year, according to hundreds of records during the time-frame. That figure varied from borough to borough: in Brooklyn, only 2 percent of schools had data showing that they were inspected annually.
