Under legislation pending in Albany, the state's 911 dispatchers would be designated as "first-responders" and therefore eligible for the wages, benefits, counseling and training provided to uniformed responders.
The legislation, introduced by Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano and State Sen. Monica Martinez, would cover Emergency Operators, Emergency Services Dispatchers, Public Safety Dispatchers and Emergency Complaint Operators who work for municipal, county and regional agencies that handle millions of calls a year.
