Citing her “deep disappointment” at Mayor de Blasio’s management of the coronavirus epidemic, city Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot resigned from her post Tuesday morning.
Dr. Barbot and the Mayor have clashed on several occasions since the outbreak began to envelop the city in mid-March, most notably following Mr. de Blasio’s decision, in early May, to have the city’s public-hospital system, NYC Health + Hospitals, take the lead on testing and tracing of city residents. That verdict effectively sidelined Dr. Barbot’s 6,000-member Health Department from that initiative despite its superior expertise in those areas.
