California Labor Secretary Julie Su has vaulted into contention for the post in the Biden administration.

With three men—Boston Mayor Mary Walsh, Michigan Congressman Andy Levin and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders—all thought to have been in pole position for the post, attention has shifted to Su, an attorney by training and a past MacCarthur “genius” grant recipient for her labor work.

“I think she’s very, very viable,” Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera told Bloomberg Law.

Biden’s Labor Secretary choice will slot into a high-profile position, given the economic downturn attributable to the pandemic and the worker-safety issues that have also gained urgency since spring’s coronavirus surge.
