A plan to effectively close SUNY Downstate University Hospital was slammed by unions representing thousands of employees at the Brooklyn teaching hospital.
SUNY Chancellor John King announced last week that Governor Kathy Hochul has directed the hospital's administrators to formulate a plan to transform the facility, which has been facing financial struggles, losing about $100 million each year. The hospital plans to relocate services to other facilities in the area, and state officials hope to establish “a SUNY Downstate wing” consisting of about 150 beds at nearby Kings County Hospital, according to the chancellor.
