A federal judge has rejected arguments by the Police Benevolent Association that it has veto power over a wide-ranging agreement outlining how the NYPD responds to protests.
Judge Colleen McMahon’s decision, issued Wednesday, clears the way for the implementation of a layered response to most public demonstrations that is intended to underscore protesters’ First Amendment rights. Her decision in effect pushed back on the union’s contentions that the agreement would put officers in danger.
