And justice for all

Regarding Joseph Cannisi’s most recent letter (“Hush up,” The Chief, April 26):

Donald Trump is an odious, toxic individual. But even he is entitled to due process of law. Presumption of innocence. Trial by jury of peers. Zealous, aggressive representation. Guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

If Trump is found guilty, he should suffer the consequences. But Mr. Cannisi should not be "hop[ing]" Mr. Trump goes to jail. Mr. Cannisi should understand that life can sometimes be bizarre and while I don't wish this on him he never knows when he could be in a situation of potential criminality, even if he lives his life on the straight and narrow.

Once I was taking my ex-wife's then 9-year-old son to connect with his paternal grandmother. We were unable to locate her, which caused him great distress. A passerby mistook his distress for distress over being with me and called the police. The police handled it quickly, courteously and professionally, my ex's son identified my relationship to him and the reason for his distress, and I was free to go after briefly being detained and questioned. But this is one example of how a law abiding citizen can find himself being questioned by the police.

I am not a Trump supporter. I'm not commenting on the former president’s guilt or innocence. I am saying Trump should be tried in a court of law and if applicable sentenced by a judge, not in a newspaper's letters section.

But Nat, you were questioned because cops are required to check on the welfare and safety of children. There’s a tremendous difference in your case and Trump who obviously threatens our democracy - the proof comes from his own mouth. Yes, a jury in each case determines his fate.
