Latonia McKinney took a leap and landed as Director of the City Council’s Finance Division. The San Francisco native, who was the first African-American woman to hold the position, got it in 2015 after 17 years of working her way up the Council’s ranks. “I always wanted to be somewhere where it didn’t feel like a job, but rather, ‘what am I building?’ ” she said in a July 10 interview.
The youngest of four kids, Ms. McKinney was the first in her family to graduate from college. “I was very education-oriented,” she said. “There was a lot on me to succeed.”
