Former Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte agreed to pay the city $18,500 for using a vehicle assigned to him in 2016 for personal trips. The disclosure of these trips following an audit by the Department of Investigation was a factor in his retirement less than two months later.
In the settlement document with the Conflicts of Interest Board, released July 17, Mr. Ponte admitted taking 29 personal trips that year in the vehicle, which was supposed to have been used only for city business or commuting to work. Seventeen of the trips were to Maine, where he had been State Corrections Commissioner before coming to the city; six were to New Jersey; six were to Massachusetts, and one was to Niagara Falls.
