President Donald J. Trump’s principal adversary is the truth, and by association, the media.
This has hardly been clearer than with Trump’s recent denial of the proof from Turkey of the murder and dismemberment of a U.S. legal resident and Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, in the Saudi Consulate in Turkey.
Turkish officials have stated they have video and audio proof of exactly what happened when Khashoggi entered the consulate on Oct. 2 to get a document he needed for his upcoming wedding. They say he was tortured, killed and dismembered before his body parts were apparently removed in several Saudi vehicles.
When asked what his response to the Saudis would be, Trump first asked if Khashoggi was a citizen. When told he was a legal U.S. resident, Trump discounted it, claiming that he would not jeopardize a $110-billion arms deal that the U.S. had with Saudi Arabia.
Besides the ugliness of his balance in favor of money over a murdered U.S. resident, Trump, as always, blatantly lied. There is no firm $110-billion arms deal with the Saudis; there is only a proposal for a long-term deal which may never come to fruition.
It is clear that Trump will do everything he can, regardless of the credible evidence from Turkey, to excuse the murder of the Washington Post columnist from an order by one of Trump’s ruthless, autocratic buddies, Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
It’s not really about the U.S. economy; it’s about Trump’s own economic benefits (emoluments). Trump will never do anything to lose the business of rich Saudis who spend a great deal of money at Trump’s hotels.
This is just the latest atrocity from this 29-year-old heir to the Saudi throne. According to The Economic Times, Prince Salman, while pushing for women to drive, has overseen the arrest of women’s-rights activists. While calling for foreign investment, he has imprisoned businessmen, royals and others in an alleged crackdown on corruption that soon resembled a shakedown of the kingdom’s richest, most-powerful people.
Trump’s true adversaries are honest journalists whose investigations and writings expose Trump as a con man, a fraud, and a threat to America’s moral integrity and leadership position in the world. He is a traitor who damages our nation every day he remains in office. We can only hope and pray that Robert Mueller and state prosecutors connect the dots quickly and force his removal from office.
