As a retired transit worker, I know the Transport Workers Union has a separate fund for political activities that’s totally supported by voluntary contributions. I’m sure we’re not the only union with that separation. But City College Professor Daniel DiSalvo of the corporate-funded Manhattan Institute “think tank,” in an Op-Ed piece that appeared in the Feb. 14 Daily News,” neglected to mention this.
Before unions, normal workweeks were seven days, with 12-hour workdays. Pensions, health care and vacations were pipe dreams. Early union organizers endured threats and violence to get a majority of employees at different workplaces to vote for a union.
