Tax Savings Add Up

Posted 7/16/18

Retired DOT employee Joseph Cannisi doesn’t know much about taxes. Like so many others, his dislike of President Trump gets in the way of facts.

Cannisi (July 6 letter) incorrectly calculates the taxes a married couple with two children taking the standard deduction will pay next year as compared with 2017 and says they will pay more. Wrong. He is correct that taxable income would be less in 2017, but his calculations ignore the increased child tax credit (up from $1,000 to $2,000 per child) and the significantly lower tax rates. (Also, under old tax law, the child tax credits began phasing out at a combined income of $110,000, while the $2,000 per child doesn’t phase out until $400,000 of joint income.)
