It was an understatement when Mark Toor wrote (April 15 issue) that the Borough Park Orthodox Jewish community had “influence in city politics disproportionate to their numbers.” That group, along with the Orthodox communities in Williamsburg and Crown Heights, wields power beyond any group in this city or state.
Mayors, Republican or Democrat, respond directly to their rabbis’ calls. Is anyone surprised that Gov. David Paterson was a paid consultant for Joel Landau of the Allure Group? They just made a $72-million profit by flipping the Rivington House nursing home.
