The 12/7 editorial made some valid points about the “FDNY Disparities,” the foremost being how under-compensated EMS personnel are. In addition, the surging population and absurd traffic patterns are causing response problems for both EMS and FDNY units.
That being said, the fight to open new fire companies or to prevent current companies from being closed should be carried out by the affected neighborhoods and their community boards, not the firefighter unions. The UFA should focus on safety standards and ensuring that our minimum staffing levels per company are maintained. It is management’s prerogative to determine the number of fire companies needed to protect the city.
