Stewart B. Epstein’s criticism (Nov. 30 letter) of prosperous Democrats who are out of touch with how most people are struggling while pushing Identity Politics is so correct.
These people see nothing wrong with an inadequate Social Security COLA that sometimes leads to no raises. They find nothing wrong with Federal workers’ wage freezes. They also have no criticism for the start of a trillion-dollar nuclear arms modernization that violates the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
That all happened under President Barack Obama, who was not only a Democrat but satisfied the “Identity Politics” crowd by being the first person of color to occupy that office. It didn’t matter how awful a candidate his former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, was. They wanted her as the first woman President.
Now the “Identity Politics” crowd is pushing California Senator Kamala Harris for the 2020 presidential campaign. She’s a woman who’s black and Indian.
But as California’s Attorney General, Harris argued that an innocent man, Daniel Larsen, should not be released from prison. She argued that he missed the deadline to file a writ of habeas corpus. In other words, keep an innocent man in prison on a legal technicality. Charges against Larsen were eventually dropped by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office in 2014.
In 2015, Harris defended convictions obtained via false confessions, perjury and withholding evidence. Federal Appeals Judge Alex Kozinski threw out the convictions and told Harris’ lawyers, “Talk to the attorney general and make sure she understands the gravity of the situation.”
In 2011, Harris argued against releasing inmates from overcrowded prisons by saying that they’d lose an important labor pool. Ah, a woman of color arguing in favor of the new Jim Crow.
