Letter: Unions Must Stay United

As Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio comes sweeping into office along with a tide of progressive reformers, labor in New York City faces both a crisis and an opportunity.

We all know the crisis we face—undoing the Bloomberg administration’s attacks on civil-service and public institutions such as Health Department clinics, HHC and NYCHA; and obtaining wage increases and pay equity to match the cost of living and our increased productivity over the years. The opportunity arises out of the crisis—for the first time, all New York City unions including DC 37, the Teachers, police and MTA unions are without contracts.
