Mayor De Blasio’s “NextGeneration NYCHA” plan misses the mark when it comes to providing services at NYCHA senior and community centers. The plan essentially privatizes vital social services, and it is questionable whether residents will receive the same quality of services as they are currently receiving.
Under “NextGeneration NYCHA,” workers in our community and senior centers will be re-deployed out of NYCHA. These workers have worked in our NYCHA centers their entire careers, and many of them live in public housing. They know the communities. They can relate to NYCHA residents. Our track record shows that dedicated NYCHA workers do this job better than outside contractors, who don’t have the same level of training or accountability.
