On behalf of the membership of DC 37 Local 1549, thank you for your continued support of civilianization (putting higher-paid, able-bodied uniformed employees in the communities protecting the public rather than performing routine clerical duties). Sarah Dorsey’s article accurately reports that the City Council’s budget proposal calls for civilianization of 500 positions at the NYPD and 200 positions at the Department of Correction.
Civilianization bridges the gap between the city administration that says there are enough police officers and the City Council that says more are needed. More officers may be needed, but civilianization should be carried out prior to, or in conjunction with, the hiring.
