When I became aware that Steve Downs had decided to take the step into retirement, a number of willing thoughts passed through my mind: how time passes with such speed, the great leader he was of TWU Local 100, and the man he was for all seasons. There were tears in my eyes as these thoughts took their turn.
I got to know Steve Downs in the beginning of the New Directions movement that he helped to found. I took an active part at the start, but then lost patience and interest and did not play much of a part.
