Editorial: Tone-Deaf Protesters

The Oct. 24 rally in Washington Square Park against police brutality—four days after the murder of Police Officer Randolph Holder—was similar to one held 10 months ago in the wake of the murders of two other cops here in its self-indulgent tone-deafness.

If the point was that their cause remained valid even in the wake of a tragedy in which a police officer, rather than an unarmed person of color, was the victim, participants should have toned down the rhetoric and the signs they carried. The failure to do so feeds the suspicion that they don’t care about winning people to the cause as much as they do airing their grievances with the same callous venom they accuse cops of showing.
