The New York Post huffed and puffed its way into a call for Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro’s resignation last week based on the summoning of two fire companies to shovel out a path between his driveway and the street the morning after the Jan. 23 blizzard. While the Department of Investigation is looking into what the Post called an “apparent abuse of power,” there may be less to this than the “off with his head” screed suggests.
As the Post itself reported, Mr. Nigro made sure the walk outside his Whitestone, Queens home was shoveled before the help call went out. One union source told us that the call for assistance in clearing out a path into the driveway came not from the Commissioner but rather his department driver, who would have been unable to do it himself.
