Little Murders and The DAs Who Enable Them

The vacating of an eighth conviction obtained by former Det. Louis Scarcella and the suicide of 22-year-old Kalief Browder within a few days of each other earlier this month could be viewed as the end-products of a badly twisted cop and a broken system for dealing with accused juvenile offenders at Rikers Island.

Yet as horrifying as the behavior of some of the links in the criminal-justice chain may be, what truly shocked the conscience in those cases was the behavior of the District Attorneys who are supposed to be the system’s guardians.
