Keeping School-Bus Companies Honest Requires Focus

A week after the union representing school-bus drivers and escorts held a strike authorization vote in reaction to a school-bus company attempting to create a two-tiered workforce in defiance of the de Blasio administration, a deal was reached Sept. 18 between Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union and the Reliant Bus Company that averted the threatened walkout.

No details were made available, with union President Michael Cordiello saying in a statement that while the terms still needed to be finalized, “we believe this is a mutually beneficial agreement for both the company and the hard-working men and women that are tasked with transporting our city’s schoolchildren.” (One source said Reliant had agreed to reinstate pension and health coverage.)
