Far too often over the past decade, the dissident group within Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents school-bus employees, has had seemingly golden opportunities to bring reform to the union dashed by bad luck, bad timing and the caprices of the Department of Education.
Its first try at capturing the union’s presidency after its former leader, Sal Battaglia, went to prison for conspiring with the late Matty “The Horse” Ianniello to keep it under the thumb of the Genovese Crime Family, fell narrowly short of succeeding when two activists, both angered that they weren’t chosen to be the group’s presidential candidate, formed their own slates and siphoned just enough votes from John Bisbano to allow Mr. Battaglia’s replacement, Michael Cordiello, to gain a full term.
