Beyond Cases' Notoriety, Some Unpleasant Truths

It was hard to say which criminal-justice controversy involving notorious incidents was more surprising: the protests over Anthony Weiner being given prison time for sexting a 15-year-old, or Police Officer James Frascatore’s decision to sue the NYPD as well as ex-tennis star James Blake for slander at a point when his future in the department rested at the discretion of Police Commissioner James O’Neill.

In Mr. Weiner’s defense, those arguing against his imprisonment insisted that he was a man with a sickness rather than a criminal and that there was no public good accomp­lished or harm averted by incarcerating him.
