Bill Klem, a renowned baseball umpire during the first half of the 20th century, was known to respond to those who questioned him by saying, “It ain’t nothin’ ‘til I call it.”
The point behind the remark was that his job made him the authority on what was a ball or a strike, or fair or foul, and that was not subject to debate.
