Until last week, the main news regarding a breakdown in school discipline revolved around one eccentric Principal, Ben Sherman, who had allowed Forest Hills High School to deteriorate in recent years by eliminating adult supervision from hallways and bathrooms, leading to widespread drug use in the building.
In mid-February, the United Federation of Teachers chapter at the school approved a no-confidence vote in Mr. Sherman’s leadership. A couple of weeks later, the Department of Education acted to deal with the problem, sending more School Safety Agents to the school and appointing a top official to bird-dog Mr. Sherman. Under the spacey Principal’s rationale that pot was soon going to be legalized in New York, he should have had no problem with pupils bringing six-packs of beer to class. Except, of course, for the age restrictions—which should have applied on pot as well.
