A special commission of past and present city and state Comptrollers struck a good balance in its recommendations on a long-overdue pay hike for state legislators.
They proposed that over a three-year period, salaries rise from $79,500 to $130,000. That leaves them short of the $148,500 that City Council Members receive, but the plan offers lawmakers the option to continue earning outside income, which the Council gave up in return for the higher pay level. But the Comptrollers placed a limit on that income of $19,500, which would prevent legislators from making huge amounts as lawyers paid more for their influence than their actual work.
