State Sen. Eric Adams, a retired police Captain, held a press conference with leaders from the minority community June 11 to protest comments from Police Commissioner Ray Kelly questioning what minority residents were doing to counteract violence while opposing stop-and-frisk.

Lawmakers and leaders of several groups said they had been working for years to tamp down the violence, that has been made harder by cuts in after-school and other youth programs. Mr. Adams scolded Mr. Kelly for believing that being driven to and from a church in a black community was an actual visit to that community. He invited Mr. Kelly to take off the gun, ditch the security detail and walk the streets of his Brooklyn district with him.

Welcome to the discussion.
