City Council Members pressed the Department of Education to use more of its budget for the upcoming fiscal year to hire Social Workers and Guidance Counselors and pushed for paid parental leave for education staff at a May 22 hearing.
The DOE’s $25.5-billion budget includes $1.2 million to hire an additional 10 Social Workers for students in temporary housing but doesn’t address the 41 schools that don’t have a full-time Guidance Counselor or Social Worker. The DOE has estimated that it would cost $5.2 million to fill the vacant spots.
