As people with limited or no political experience have increasingly become viable candidates for high office, it’s sparked debates about whether time in government counts when evaluating a candidate.

Barack Obama successfully made the case in the 2008 Democratic primaries that while Hillary Clinton had more experience at the upper levels of the national political world, she had not used it to make good decisions, notably in voting to authorize the Bush Administration to go to war with Iraq on flimsy evidence. On the other hand, for all her faults as a campaigner, Ms. Clinton’s knowledge of government and her gravity look better every day that the nation is subjected to the reactionary management and juvenile rantings of Donald Trump.
