The outpouring of support for Deputy Fire Chief Paul Mannix last week came both in words and in increments of $25, $50 and $100.
Mr. Mannix was the longtime head of Merit Matters, a group that opposed affirmative action in FDNY hiring and strenuously objected to the Vulcan Society of Black Firefighters and U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit against its exam process. He disbanded the organization last month after being fined 50 days’ pay, apparently for participating in leaks to the media targeting women and people of color struggling in the department.
