Three days after U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced the arrest of two police commanders and a Sergeant on bribery charges involving two key financial supporters of Mayor de Blasio, the Mayor and Police Commissioner William J. Bratton lambasted the cops while trying to distance themselves from responsibility for the behavior that rocked the foundations of the NYPD.
Mr. Bharara during a June 20 press conference said the two donors—Jeremy Reichberg, who was also arrested, and Jona Rechnitz, who is cooperating with prosecutors in the hope of limiting his punishment—had secured “in effect, a private police force for themselves and their friends” with large outlays of cash and gifts.
