When Nursing Assistant Ana Hernandez injured her back lifting patients at Brooklyn’s Lutheran Medical Center, the physical pain was hard enough to deal with. It was chronic, getting worse by the end of each shift, and soon spread to her side and lower extremities.
An MRI showed that three bulging discs in her lower back were compressing her nerves, causing the pain, numbness and sciatica, but she was told that surgery could relieve her discomfort. Unfortunately, what could have been a quick improvement in her condition ended up stretching on for three years as her health deteriorated.
