Firefighters Face Higher Cancer Risk, CDC Finds

Even firefighters who never set foot on The Pile after Sept. 11 are at higher risk for several types of cancer, likely because they’re regularly exposed to carcinogens on the job, a new study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has found.

The study, which involved only men, found that the firefighters were about 80 percent more likely to develop melanoma, 60 percent more likely to develop esophageal cancer, and 50 percent more likely to contract prostate or brain cancer than members of the general population.
