Labor leaders in recent weeks have sharply objected to a proposed Fire Cadet program, charging that it could undermine fair-hiring practices in a bid to diversify the mostly white male firefighting force.
But the unions were silent earlier this year when Mayor de Blasio strengthened a similar NYPD program, approving a $10-million budget to increase its ranks from 117 cadets to 637—the most in the program’s history.
