Ex-Vulcans’ Head Says His Remarks About Firefighting Risks Got Distorted

The former head of the Fire Department Vulcan Society said Aug. 30 that remarks he made reassuring prospective Firefighters that the job was not as dangerous as they might believe had been taken out of context in a New York Post article to give the impression he had claimed that the job was easier than advertised.

Referring to a video that was made of his half-hour recruiting pitch last spring to students at Borough of Manhattan Community College, Fire Capt. Paul Washington said in a phone interview, “The video would speak for itself.” He speculated that the person who provided The Post with the video or the paper’s reporter had other reasons for wanting to embarrass him.
