Fire Deputy Chief Michael McPartland was surveying the burning building on 2nd Ave. in the East Village on March 26. He’d arrived at the scene about 10 minutes earlier, just after 3:15 p.m., when the face of 121 2nd Ave. had exploded into the street, sparked by a gas leak in the basement.
