With the transition last week of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association to the Police Benevolent Association, the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association stands alone among uniformed city unions with “men” in their title. And although female Sanworkers have gained an increasing foothold over the past three decades, the union is not likely to relinquish that moniker anytime soon, according to President Harry Nespoli.
Paraphrasing Shakespeare, he asked, “What is the name, as long as you have the union representing everyone on the job? We treat everyone equal, no matter what.”
